More about the new Avira Internet Security 2012:

Avira Internet Security 2012 is yet another program, like ESET, Norton and McAfee, that’s made to help you be safe on the Internet. Whatever you do on the web, it’s a good idea to take the necessary measures to keep your computer running smoothly and guarantee the security of your data.

Avira Internet Security has a very simple user interface. It’s not the best design I saw in this type of product but it works just like many other software. The main page is a scorecard of all you need to know about the current state of protection. Left pane gives you a quick access to PC Protection, Internet Protection, and Administration. The main screen summarizes your current settings and alerts you in case of any security issues. It’s broken down by PC protection and Internet protection and lists the corresponding areas of concern. If you want to access and review or change settings of any particular category, click on a gear right to the current setting (which is on or off) and the program takes you to details of each category. Also, if Avira finds that your computer is not secure, it will indicate that and provides a handy “Fit it” button that will lead you and inform of actions that need to be taken to solve the problem.

Accessing the options from the left pane has to do with prevention activities by Avira. They allow you to customize all the setting based on the circumstances. You can:

  • Choose the security level of your Firewall; once you pick one you can also monitor upload and download transfer; choose from Low, Medium, High, Custom, or Block All; High, for example, will prevent any upload and download and make your computer invisible in a network; to beef up security even further, the software gives you control over Application rules (will ask to allow access to the programs it doesn’t recognize), Trusted Vendors
  • web protection that will block all the suspicious websites from loading; additional options give control over Child Protection to control content (particular URL or a category), access hours and time, granting full or limited use
  • email protection
  • Advanced Heuristic Analysis and Detection (AHeAD) to detect currently unknown malware; decide the level of protection from low to high
  • AntiDrive-by – this function prevents unwanted downloads while you surf the web

Avira Internet Security is easy to download and configure. Once you download it, you can either go Express set up (default) or custom, deciding on features you want to include. The latter option is recommended for more experienced users. It is easy on the operating system and Game Mode allows gamers to enjoy playing without being disturbed by alerts.

Once a threat is detected and blocked, Avira Internet Security can remove and eliminate all traces of infection. If damage is made to your computer, Backup System function can recover data. This is somewhat limited to the folders you decide to backup, giving you an option of a selective backup. If damage disabled the computer completely, you can use Avira Rescue System to boot up and try to recover data. Rescue System requires creating a CD/DVD later used to start the computer.

Avira Internet Security 2012 scored 4.5 out of 6 for Protection by AV Test. When it comes to 0-day viruses it scored the industry average of 95% in December 2011 and one percentage point higher the month before. During the same period, it detected 100% of all know malware and 99% of malware discovered in the previous quarter (vs. Industry average of 97%). The software was quite strong in its repair ability beating industry averages in all the measured categories that include: detection of actively running malware (100 vs. 97), removal of all active components of widespread malware (92 vs. 87), and further removal of malicious components (68 vs. 61). The scores in Usability category were a bit lower comparing to other products. Whereas the computer slowdown caused by the software was the industry average of 10 seconds, false warnings and false blocking were a bit worse.

Cnet.com users rated the current version 3.5 out of 5 stars. Some of the pros were related to the efficiency of scanning and deleting of viruses. Cons had to do with the program missing some malware. PCmag.com gave it 3 out of 5 and a “Good” rating stating that the quality of its components it not equal across the board. Antivirus is its strongest component and the laggards include Parental Control and Privacy, both scoring only 2 out of 5. Pros included solid malware blocking and cleanup and robust firewall. On the downside was rootkit and phishing protection and very simple backup, not meeting the industry standards. In summary, the reviewer called it “good suite, but not a great one.”
