Our review of Dragon Dictate 2.5:

Nuance Dragon Dictate 2.5 is the best selling speech recognition software for Mac users and now fully compatible with OS-X Lion. If you type slowly or want to take multitasking to extreme, this is the perfect solution for you.

The most obvious benefit of using Nuance Dragon Dictate 2.5 is in responding to emails or generating reports. The lengthier the report, the most beneficial the software proves to be as it frees you from hitting your keyboard thousands of times. But the software can also help with browsing the Internet and opening and closing other programs.

Before you get started, Nuance Dragon Dictate 2.5 has to “get to know” you. In order for the product to provide the maximum benefit, you have to spend some time practicing speech and the software needs to get familiar with your accent, pronunciation, and speed. Multiple users can use the software and each should go through the process individually so that the program operates smoothly and is optimized for all who use it. Part of this initial recognition process is repeating sentences as instructed by the program, along with learning how to use the commands. Commands are trigger words that tell the software what to do and permit you to operate your computer with very little help from a mouse or a keyboard. There are many tutorials to fine tune voice recognition with more difficult and tricky sentences and it’s a good idea to go to tutorial center and practice. In Tools tab you find audio settings and general training. There are also educational tools allowing you to add words to your vocabulary. You can also input new words to the software vocabulary, perhaps something unique that’s not easily recognizable, like abbreviations or an alternative spelling for names.

Using Nuance Dragon Dictate 2.5 might not be very smooth at the beginning as it takes some time to learn how to properly instruct the software to use commands. For example, If I didn’t like the last sentence I dictated, I would say “Scratch That” and it would take me back to the last time I stopped dictating. I can repeat the same command and the software would take me back to the previous time dictation ended. Luckily, you can use the keyboard and the mouse if you get stuck, and perhaps some functions will always be done faster with the keyboard or mouse. You also have to be in sync with the voice recognition speed although you can make adjustment for fast typing but low accuracy or slow typing but high accuracy in recognizing speech.

The software offers many features intended to manipulate the document appearing on the screen. These features definitely improve speed of formatting documents, as all you have to do to change size or font is to say “Set size” and the number for Nuance Dragon Dictate 2.0 to change text to desired size. “Set font Courier” would change current Times New Roman into Courier.

Once you gain traction with Nuance Dragon Dictate 2.5 it is quite impressing how efficiently it can operate various programs on your computer. It works with Safari, Pages, iCal, iChat, Mail, and TextEdit among others. You can open a web browser (“Start Safari”) and ask it to look up an idea (“Do a search”). You can instruct the computer to open a webpage, YouTube for example and look for a video. Nuance Dragon Dictate 2.5 allows for a hands-free use of a computer.

Macworld gave the software 4 out of 5 Mice and was very upbeat about the superior voice recognition as comparing to the previous version. On the negative side, the reviewer wasn’t happy with the voice-activated editing but because the program is relatively fast, it overcomes a shortfall with editing capabilities. In summary, the reviewer mentioned that it’s a “solid, efficient program.”
P.S. This report was typed at a slow speed; unfortunately Nuance Dragon Dictate 2.5 did not collaborate this time.
