Our review of Laplink PC Lock

Laplink PC Lock was created as a response to a growing number of identity thieves and stolen laptops. In order to protect your personal information, you can have PC Lock encrypt all of it with the military grade 256-bit encryption standard and accessible only upon providing password and answering security questions.

First, a wizard takes you through the fairy standard registration process where aside from entering personal and product information, you are requested to provide answers to security questions. You will have to answer them every time you access PC Lock Web Management Console from where you adjust the settings. The software prompts you to back up all you information before the encryption process starts. The whole process is simple and leads from one wizard-guided window to another until all data is encrypted and safe.

As previously mentioned, in order to administer changes to you PC Lock settings, you have to access it on the Internet. Your computer will be listed there and if you click on Security Setting (just below), you will be able to do the following:

  • Report your laptop as lost or stolen.
  • If the computer is missing, decide what to do with the files on your computer once it connects to the Internet (disable access or delete encrypted files).
  • Change password to access Web Management Console.
  • Determine number of times incorrect password is entered at login before a user is warned or access to encrypted files disabled (also true when the PC is offline for extended period of time).

One more option available in your Web Management Console if File Selection Settings, which lets you decide what gets encrypted. Upon initial installation, the types of encrypted files will be listed in the console. You can then decide if you would like to delete certain file types, add email files, or exclude directories from encryption.

PCadvisor.co.uk gave the product 4 out of 5 stars for a cheap way to secure data. It found few minor problems when using the product in Virtual Box VM, but apart from that the software worked flawlessly.
